"On the day after Christmas, Les was getting the
boys into pajamas when he noticed a
lump on Christopher's belly. Les asked
me if I had seen it before and I said
I hadn't. We went immediately to the
Emergency Room. 3 hours later and we
had no answers. Monday morning came
and we took Christopher to his pediatrician.
They sent us for an ultrasound at the
hospital and then back to the pediatrician's
office. The pediatrician said there
was a large mass in or on his liver.
We headed down to Children's Hospital
in Seattle that afternoon. Within a
week we went from a healthy, happy
family to having Christopher start
chemotheraphy!
It was a whirlwind of a week and continued
to be so. Christopher was diagnosed
with Hepatoblastoma which is
a rare liver tumor. Fortunately, it
is treatable and for that we will be
forever greatful."

"Christopher had his surgery on April 28th and looked very well afterward. His
color was great. His belly looked normal again. We then talked with Dr. Healey
asking him how big the tumor was and he couldn't give exact sizes but showed
us with his hands something like a small cantelope.
The pathology results recently came in and they were exactly as we expected.
Dr. Healey got the whole tumor with a margin of good liver all the way around
it! At its largest point the tumor had grown to 13 cm. The results also confirmed
that the tumor was still viable. This is important because now they know for
sure that we have to change chemo.
We are happy to say that we have a Tumor Free Topher! We are definitely
breathing easier and know that the end is in sight. But, Topher still has a couple
of rounds of chemo ahead of him and these rounds are going to be tough."
Topher was a brave little man throughout his whole ordeal, and
being on the outside looking in one has to admire the courage he and
other young children display facing uncertain outcomes.
